LEAD US NOT INTO TEMPTATION

Nicole Winfeld (Extracted from "Vatican Faithful Should Listen to Science", Yahoo News, 4 November 2005)

"A Vatican cardinal said Thursday that the faithful should listen to what secular modern science has to offer, warning that religion risks turning into "fundamentalism" if it ignores scientific reason.. . . . But he [Cardinal Paul Poupard] said science, too, should listen to religion."

[Ed Oh no! The Medieval Church in Europe oppressed those who wanted to think freely and trade freely for hundreds of years. Many outstanding individuals were burned at the stake and millions of people suffered unnecessary starvation because of price controls over food which caused town markets to be empty when they had no need to have been. The Medieval Church was as oppressive as any tryannical government. There is nothing to choose between them. It is just that highly organised religions and governments use slightly different language -- and often fear -- in order to manipulate the people. Today, we have many different power centres in developed countries -- law, media, science, business, pressure groups, and also sheer indifference to authority -- and all these manage to keep power-seekers approximately in bounds. Even so, it sometimes takes a long time before leaders who lie to their people, such as Bush and Blair, receive their come-uppance.]
