24 October 2005 TWO UNASSIMILATED GROUPS IN THE UK Cahal Milmo (Extracted from "Night of violence in Birmingham leaves Asians fearing for their lives", The Independent, 24 October 2005) "Police patrolled the Lozells area of Birmingham yesterday to prevent a recurrence of the clashes between Afro-Caribbean and Asian youths." [Ed Sikhs, Hindus and Chinese have migrated into this country in moderate numbers (roughly a quarter of a million each) and have generally assimilated our Western values -- sometimes becoming immensely successful financially -- while at the same time retaining their own individual cultures which benefits them as well as making our lives more interesting (if not somewhat envious). However, Caribbean and African blacks, and also Asian Muslims have come into the country in far greater numbers (more than a million in each case)and so far there is little sign of assimilation. Indeed, unlike the other groups, both are already congealing in ghettos for defensive reasons against undereducated indigenous whites who fear for their jobs. Another unfortunate byproduct of this is that some young Asians are now muscling into the mass market drug rings that were almost exclusively run by Caribbeans hitherto. The rumour on the local radio that an Asian girl was sexually molested by a black caused a riot in which one person has died, seven injured and a policeman shot in the leg. The TV channels tried to obscure the real situation last night but The Independent tells it as it is this morning. Because of their size and exclusion it is unlikely that there will ever be peace between these ethnic groups and more likely that ghettos will become even more concentrated, and assimilation even more protracted -- if ever.]
