A CIVILISED WAY OF DYING

BBC Online (Extracted from "Euthanasia debate moves to Lords", 10 October 2005)

"The House of Lords is to debate the controversial issue of assisted dying, as a peer prepares to introduce a bill. Lord Joffe said a private member's bill he is set to introduce within weeks is likely to propose doctors prescribing, but not administering, lethal drugs. He said for some people, just having the prescription would take 'an enormous weight off their shoulders'."

[Ed: Hopefully, this will be one of the last occasions when the Christian Church in this country, both Roman Catholic and Church of England, is successfully able to oppose the wishes of tens of thousands of intelligent and thoughtful old people who want to die in dignity and/or do not want to be a heavy burden on their relatives for years on end. In a generation's time, euthanasia can be quietly, but properly practised in the same way that kind owners of pets in pain or extreme old age have them put to sleep.]
